Opportunity Snapshot
In this position you will join the clear leader in our industry at a time when we are making significant capital investments. You'll contribute to a wide variety of projects as the company grows in multiple directions, from facility upgrades to ground up construction. As we contribute to our growth, you will be in a position to take advantage of the "upward draft" of opportunity it creates. JM Eagle offers stability in an unpredictable economy: in addition to being the world's largest manufacturer of PVC pipe, we have a diverse, recession-resilient product portfolio.
You will provide design and support to engineering projects for expansion and improvements. Depending on your skills and experience you may focus on manufacturing facility power supply system, production and utility power engineering, or on equipment automation using PLC. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. We're moving our engineering team from New Jersey to California and we'll consider people from all experience levels, from recent grads to seasoned managers. You'll also need to be able to thrive in a corporate culture that combines the best of American and Taiwanese business practices.
JM Eagle is the world's largest plastic pipe manufacturer, an innovative leader that combines advanced technology with superior customer service to create the industry's most sophisticated and diverse products. With 25 manufacturing plants throughout North America and a workforce of over 2,300 employees, JM Eagle manufactures the widest array of high grade, high performance polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe in the industry across a wide variety of industries and applications.
What Else You'll Bring to the Table
As we build our Engineering team in Los Angeles, we are looking for Electrical Engineers at different levels of experience and with two different backgrounds and skill sets:
Engineers who have at least two years of experience with high voltage substations and design of equipment power supply and electrical piping.
Recent engineering grads or engineers with a year or so of experience who are familiar with both hardware and software, and can do PLC programming.
Regardless of your background, you'll need:
The ability to read and work from blueprints and drawings.
The ability to use AutoCAD (or MicroStation) as well as Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, and PowerPoint.
Outstanding organizational skills, including the ability to deal with ambiguity.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
At the Senior Engineer level, you will need all of the above plus:
Two to five years of experience in electrical design for manufacturing, ideally in plastics.
At the Engineering Manager level, you will need all of the above plus:
Management and leadership experience.
Experience developing and implementing policies and procedures.
You may travel in this role to the various plants across the country, although we don't expect you will travel more than 15% of the time.
What's in It for You
Highly competitive business model -- with manufacturing facilities all over the country, we offer localized service and fast response. Our product line is quite diverse, but you'll lead our efforts to explore new products, applications, materials, and markets. In fact, you may contribute to our initiative to enter the PE corrugated market, which involves bringing new facilities online.
Great work environment -- Our growth and success is inextricably linked to our most important asset: our people. We are dedicated to fostering a work atmosphere that motivates ingenuity and creative development and has attracted some of the best, brightest, and most knowledgeable employees in the pipe industry. We value the stability of structure and a methodical approach to measured change and incremental improvements.
New offices in a convenient location -- JM Eagle has purchased a 10-story building on Century Blvd near LAX, close to both the 405 and 105 freeways. We are currently renovating the top two floors and expect to occupy them in August.
A strong sense of community responsibility -- JM Eagle is committed to our core value of delivering life's essentials through the most eco-friendly plastic pipe products on the market, helping improve and maintain health and quality of life throughout the world. We remain active in community relief efforts (e.g. Hurricane Katrina) and donate pipe for these and other humanitarian activities in the US and around the world.
Excellent compensation -- we offer a competitive salary and bonus incentive program. Our benefits package, including medical, hospitalization, prescription, pension, and a 401(k) matching savings plan is excellent. Tuition reimbursement for professional growth is offered and encouraged.
A Company on the Move
You will help us carry out two large-scale initiatives:
J-M Manufacturing, the largest manufacturer of plastic pipes, acquired PW Eagle, the second largest, in June 2007, doubling almost overnight. We're integrating both into what is now the clear market leader, JM Eagle.
JM Eagle is relocating its corporate headquarters and infrastructure from Livingston, New Jersey to Los Angeles, California.
While about 60 employees will move with us, we'll hire about 130 new ones here. We'll ask you to spend some time in New Jersey between now and the time the LA office goes online in order to learn about our products, culture, and processes. We are sensitive to your family responsibilities and other obligations, and we'll work with you to create an individual bi-coastal schedule that will suit our objectives as well as yours.
More About Your Role
If you're a good fit for this position, you already know most of what this job entails. However, to be sure we're providing a complete picture, here are some details.
Reporting to a Project Manager, you will join an Engineering team of 10 to 15 that will include the Director of Engineering, about three Mechanical Engineers, three or four Electrical Engineers, and others. At any given time you can expect to be involved with multiple projects of varying size and scope. While you will have individual deliverables, we foster a strong teamwork environment.
As part of the integration of our new acquisition we are ensuring that ALL our facilities are state of the art. You'll support a variety of projects, from improvements to plant expansions, including start-up and testing of projects in the field. If you focus on utility power engineering, you will handle design work including electrical power utilities, extrusion line electrical layout, and plant utility equipment electrical layout. If you focus on equipment automation engineering, you will support installation and upgrades of hardware and software, and program using PLC.
We're also making a significant investment in order to enter the PE corrugated pipe market, a market we expect will continue to grow significantly. You may contribute to this initiative, which will involve launching entirely new production lines in multiple factories, with equipment slated for delivery in the very near future.
In the Senior Engineer role you may provide mentoring and guidance to less experienced Engineers. In the Engineering Manager role you will assign projects, monitor project status, and help solve problems as they arise.
Keys to Success
While this is an exciting time to join JM Eagle, it is also a challenging time. However, if you're a good fit for this role, you'll see the opportunity right behind the challenge. To excel in this role in this unique situation (and beyond) you will:
Maintain a high energy level and be flexible, persistent, and resourceful -- there are a lot of things to accomplish against a background of significant change.
Remain willing to "wear a lot of hats" in our lean business model.
Exercise sensitivity and patience in understanding our culture, processes, and communication style.
Be comfortable with a degree of ambiguity, but also with a fair amount of structure.
If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
