Opportunity Snapshot
This position offers you the opportunity to join a company that is already the world's largest plastic pipe manufacturer but continues to grow -- not only do we have a diverse, recession-resilient product portfolio, but we also are pursuing multiple initiatives to enter new markets. You will assume leadership of a well-run QA function supporting 22 manufacturing plants, leading a team of three Engineers in a hands-on "player coach" role. As we grow your responsibilities will expand, and your success here could set you up to pursue promotional opportunities as they arise.
To be a good fit for this position you will have solid experience in production environments, including quality control, supervision, and inventory monitoring. We're looking for a professional with a positive, constructive, and partnering approach who focuses on getting to the bottom of an issue and resolving it. You'll also need the leadership skills to run the QA function with a good deal of autonomy. In addition, you'll need to be able to thrive in a corporate culture that combines the best of American and Taiwanese business practices.
JM Eagle is an innovative industry leader that combines advanced technology with superior customer service to create the industry's most sophisticated and diverse products. We offer a highly competitive benefits package, including fully paid health insurance for employee, spouse, and dependents; a pension plan as well as a 401(k) with employer match; and more.
What Else You'll Bring to the Table
In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
A bachelor's degree in Chemical or Process Engineering or a related field.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Experience with micrometers and other precision instruments.
Solid organizational skills, including the ability to deal with ambiguity.
Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to influence and motivate others.
Preferred but not required:
Experience with multiple facilities.
Experience in the plastics industry.
Familiarity with ASTM and/or NSF standards.
You also will need to be able to travel 25% or 30% of the time to the various plants; trips typically will last two to three days.
What's in It for You
Career development -- we're pursuing a number of growth initiatives, including a push to enter the polyethylene (PE) corrugated market, which will involve bringing new facilities online. That means this role will grow organically, but it also means we'll need strong leaders, and we are committed to promoting from within. As evidence, the Director of Operations (to whom you will report) started in the company as an Engineer.
Great work environment -- our growth and success is inextricably linked to our most important asset: our people. We are dedicated to fostering a work atmosphere that motivates ingenuity and creative development and has attracted some of the best, brightest, and most knowledgeable employees in the pipe industry. We value the stability of structure and a methodical approach to measured change and incremental improvements.
New offices in a convenient location -- we recently purchased and renovated a 10-story building on Century Blvd near LAX, close to both the 405 and 105 freeways. We occupy the top two stories.
A strong sense of community responsibility -- JM Eagle is committed to our core value of delivering life's essentials through the most eco-friendly plastic pipe products on the market, helping improve and maintain health and quality of life throughout the world. We remain active in community relief efforts (e.g. Hurricane Katrina) and donate pipe for these and other humanitarian activities in the US and around the world.
Excellent compensation -- we offer a competitive salary and bonus incentive program. Our benefits package, including medical, hospitalization, prescription, pension, and a 401(k) matching savings plan is excellent. Tuition reimbursement for professional growth is offered and encouraged.
More About Your Role
If you're a good fit for this position, you already know most of what this job entails. However, to be sure we're providing a complete picture, here are some details.
You will join an Operations team that also includes managers of Production, Safety, Scheduling, and Traffic, as well as Plant Managers. In turn, you'll supervise three QA Engineers in multiple locations: Livingston, NJ (west of Newark); Cameron Park, CA (east of Sacramento); and here in our new corporate headquarters in Los Angeles. You also will provide guidance regarding QA to Plant Managers and Quality Control personnel in the plants.
While you will oversee the quality program, you also will perform audits and respond to issues at the plants. A Plant Manager may call you with an issue, or you and your team may identify an issue by monitoring trends. However the issue comes up, either you or one of the QA Engineers will contact and partner with the Plant Manager to drive to root causes and develop a solution. Solutions may cover everything from more precise tooling to better cooling capacity. You also will follow up to ensure the problem doesn't come up again.
You and your team also will be involved with product development, including plenty of new formulations, acting as liaison between R&D and the plants, and reviewing and approving product drawings, product specifications, and test methods. Based on test results you may recommend whether or not to move forward on a project.
In addition you'll maintain our relationships and third party certifications with organizations such as the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF), Plastic Pipe Institute (PPI), Underwriters Laboratories (UL), Factory Mutual (FM), and International Association for Plumbing and Mechanical Organizations (IAMPO). You also will represent JM Eagle as a member of professional associations such as ASTM, PPI, and NSF. With regard to all of these organizations we'll also look to you to stay on top of changes, deadlines, and emerging issues.
For the most part you will focus on quality related to our output, but you also will selectively audit and monitor quality certifications of purchased good to ensure they conform to purchase specifications.
Keys to Success
In June 2007, J-M Manufacturing, then the largest manufacturer of plastic pipes, acquired PW Eagle, the second largest, doubling almost overnight. We're integrating both into what is now the clear market leader, JM Eagle. While this is an exciting time to join JM Eagle, it is also a challenging time. However, if you're a good fit for this role, you'll see the opportunity right behind the challenge. In order to be an outstanding QA Manager, you will:
Ensure you and your team always bring a partnering, solutions oriented approach in interactions with the plants.
Be proactive about recognizing and responding to trends, heading off issues before they become problems.
Take charge of the QA program and achieve your goals independently, while keeping the Director of Operations in the loop.
Exercise sensitivity and patience in understanding our culture, processes, and communication style.
If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
