Benefits Manager

SUMMARY
The
Benefits Manager supervises the administration and coordination of the human resources function in a variety of functional areas including compliance, health and welfare benefits, retirement plans, workers’ compensation, and employee absence (FMLA, STD / LTD) to ensure goals and objectives are met.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Ensure adherence with regulatory compliance directives including non-discrimination tests, and plan audits in accordance with ERISA (Employee Retirement Income Security Act), DOL (U.S. Department of Labor) and IRS (Internal Revenue Service) standards. Review/update operational controls, administrative and reporting procedures.
- Perform benefits administration to include claims resolution, change reporting, annual re-evaluation of policies for cost-effectiveness, and information activities program (such as, annual company-wide Benefits Fair). Ensure Company’s benefit programs are compliant with ERISA, HIPPA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act) and COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) regulations. Negotiates benefit plan renewals.
- May conduct research to determine effectiveness of benefit programs and policies. May propose changes to carriers, coverage levels and cost sharing to best meet the needs of the Company.
- Manage retirement plan administration. Ensure timely submission of employee contributions and loan repayments. Oversee calculation of quarterly 401(k) match and annual pension contribution. Maintain ERISA and DOL compliant processes, files, and records.
- Manage multi-state workers’ compensation programs including settlement requests. Collaborate with plant human resources and management team members to investigate and resolve workers’ compensation matters. Conduct audits in partnership with designated insurance carriers and monitor audit data, activities and results. Work with Company safety team on policies, procedures and overall program activities.
- Administer application of Company leave of absence policies, maintain required documentation, and effectively oversee Return to Work policy to promote wellness and reduce absence.
- Manage vendor relations and negotiate contracts and cost. Review vendor performance, plan design, costs and utilization. Maintain and communicate plan documentation and notices.
- Coordinate with Accounting and Payroll departments regarding billing, audits, and regulatory reporting.
- Recommends new approaches, policies and procedures to effect continual improvements in efficiency of department and services provided.
- Participate in webinars, seminars and other job-related training opportunities.
- Exercise discretion and maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position may supervise designated Human Resources Coordinator(s) at the headquarters location.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree and 7 years of experience in the Human Resources field, including a minimum of 3 years of benefits management experience. A combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
COMPUTER SKILLS
Possess intermediate knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook), internet/Intranet experience. HRIS experience preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups (including employees and vendors).
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as production rates, discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to work with measurements. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form. Strong problem solving and analytical skills with the ability to use broad judgment in the day to day supervision of designated staff
